Cults In Modern Media

On the topic of modern cults the famous lo-fi artist, James Blake, came out with a music video a few months ago for his song Lindisfarne.
The movie depicts a commune-living style with lots of etherial, beautiful shots.
Even though calling something a "cult" is a touchy subject, I think it's fair to say this movie depicts a cult.

Throughout the movie it is as if they are accepting her into their group, yet to be accepted she must go through certain tasks such as drink the spit and be coloured on.

Enjoy xo

  1. The fans of many musical groups such as The Grateful Dead are often referred to as 'a cult following.' Do you think this is an improper use of the word? Or do you think there are some similarities between them and the kind of cults you are writing about?

  2. I think that when using the word 'cult' when talking about music followers or a group of people who are incredibly dedicated to one person or group at their own will it's very different from a destructive religious cult.

I don't think it's necessarily an improper use, rather an extremely different definition of the word.

There are similarities in the sense that both groups believe in and dedicate a portion of their life to one particular thing, however with religious cults like Manson Family and Jonestown the leaders manipulate followers and exploit them economically and sexually, whereas people who are part of a 'cultic following' of a band don't undergo this.

  3. Hey,
I am really interested in Jim Jones and how a man could convince so many other people to end their lives through sheer charisma. Did he gain their trusts and then mislead them? Or did he really believe they were doing the right thing? I would like to here more about the mansons and their story but also about different cults in general. The most interesting thing to here about cults in my opinion, is their strategies for getting followers, gaining their trust and then using them. The majority of "bad" cults seem to misuse the trust and dedication of those who follow for their own devices, whether it be monetary gain or something more sinister like Jim Jones. I really like the blog and am fascinated with the subject.
